Privacy

New media has opened up many new ways for our privacy and confidentiality to be invaded upon. If one were to do enough looking through the numerous accounts on social media we have, a lot of information about one's life can be found. People who post about their vacation on Instagram or their latest morning coffee interaction on Twitter are showing to everyone parts of their lives that were not previously easily shared. For those that do no have their profiles with extra privacy settings, such as only friends can view their profile and updates, complete strangers can put together a scarily accurate schedule of a person's day based on things posted on social media. In addition, it can be very hard to completely remove something from the internet. Status updates and photos are easily screenshot-able and shareable. We see many examples on social media of celebrities getting in trouble for things they posted on social media many years in the past. It is hard to take these things back once found and it can have a massive impact on people's lives. Everyone needs to take accurate precautions to protect their online profiles and privacy.

  1. People should be careful what they post online because like you mentioned above, it can be screenshotted and used against them in the future if it's a controversial post. I personally don't make any posts online.
