Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds has the potential to be the future of connectivity. It offers a revolutionary way for people to interact with each other. In the article, After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds Get a Reboot?, author Diane Mehta notes potential ways to utilize virtual worlds, which include: education, delivery services, telehealthcare, and entertainment through games such as Minecraft. The article, The virtual world moves into the classroom, by Joe Earle, mentions how virtual reality can take a person on a trip all around the world without actually going anywhere and also discusses how it is being implemented into classrooms.

Virtual worlds can come with both positive and negative consequences. Mehta talks about how virtual reality can potentially be used as a healing space for returning soldiers. By being able to realistically simulate war zones and cities, Mehta believes that there is potential for soldiers to interact with that traumatic environment with more positive stimuli. Another potential benefit discusses in Earle's article is the educational potential. Children can get as close to hands-on experiences with virtual worlds by experiencing different places around the world and teaching them about things like the place's culture and history. A virtual trip would be a lot cheaper than an actual field trip. Also, the experience of seeing things with your own eyes is much more memorable than seeing a picture of it in a textbook. One negative consequence mentioned in the Metha article is that the virtual world was so realistic that the soldier who was testing it said it was too realistic for him to be able to handle. Some people might not be okay with how realistic the virtual world is. Another negative consequence is although it is very close, interacting in a virtual world is not the same as face-to-face human interactions. Virtual worlds, while promoting very new and intense experiences, may also be taking away from seeing someone's facial expressions right in front of you.

We still have some time to go before virtual reality can be perfected. Right now, it can be fun to play games like Minecraft while being fully immersed in the world around you. The concept of a virtual world can definitely be improved upon and as technology gets better, the possibilities of virtual worlds can increase as well. People can learn about ancient Rome while seeing how the streets looked like with their own eyes or interact with artificially intelligent computers in a historic or even futuristic environment.
